Art and crafting by Rebecca Davies-Sandall. Art journaling, Spectrum Noir Design Team, Crafters Companion, paper crafting, mixed media, stamping and more.
This journal entry was came from a challenge to do a self portrait… yikes. Well I drew something resembling my younger self (I went for a childhood portrait because I wanted to go for bright garish colours which happened to resemble my favourite childhood colour combination). I urge anyone to have a go at doing a self portrait without trying to get it right because to result should still look quite cool and if in doubt add big eyes!

So to front my art journal chapter on wishes I wanted to use my Tim Holtz saying stamp. I tried to keep things fairly basic with this one as I just wanted to play.

This was a different approach for me. I wanted to use the Craftwork Cards Vintage Finds papers that I had been using to make Father’s Day cards on a journal spread but was stuck for an idea. I was going through the new Photo Booth images by Tim Holtz and found a guy who looked as though he could be a time traveller which matched the papers perfectly! Also I am using Tim Holds spritzing tool which I grabbed on a whim in the sale and was amazed to find that Spectrum Aqua pens fit!
Trivia: The quote “Roads? Where we’re going we don’t need roads!” did not originate from Back to the Future but was of course from H.G. Wells!

I have finally decided to take on a new art journal. Recently I’ve been doing some of the older Tim Holtz Tags of 2013 which is a great place to start if you need to build up supplies as some of the stamps are repeated and the products are older now so they are cheaper to buy! The tag used in this entry is from the June tutorial and basically I continued the theme. I stamped the dragonfly and pear onto watercolour card and then added colour using Spectrum Aqua pens instead of Distress Markers and blended with a water pen.

Imagine my excitement when there was a design team call to join the magnificent team for Sheena and her inkettes! The brief was to create three pieces: a card, home decor and own choice. All the pieces below were created especially for this and whatever the outcome I had great fun making these!
1 – Card: Focus on colouring
I really enjoyed making this card, it was nice and simplistic in arrangement as I wanted to showcase my new Spectrum Noir colouring skills. The result was a very reassuring card for anyone going through a hard time or a bereavement. In those extremely difficult times sometimes there are no words that you can day to someone other than “I’m there for you”. Couple this with the guy waiting patiently at a favourite place just in case you need him.
Stamps (background, moon and guy) and sentiment by Sheena
Drawing gum by Pebeo
Spectrum Noir pens and Tim Holtz distress inks
Blue mirror card, Kraft card blank (6x6), Neenah cardstock for alcohol
Spellbinders dies
Flowers, angel wing charm and string from stash
Tiny screw brads by Tim Holtz
2 – Home Decor: Focus on abstract mixed media
For this piece I wanted to hit a canvas with mixed media but still show how Sheena’s stamps can be brought into the final composition. I am big into dolls houses and as a result I have some spare windows lying around which convieniently I had already painted. I don’t yet have Sheena’s perfect partner flowers which would have been ideal for this but made do with what I had.
Canvas Paints: Acrylic paints, gesso, glass vitrail, fantasy prism and moon paints by Pebeo as was the clear outliner
Stencils: distress grid and grass by Sheena
Stamps: Magical and Laguna by Sheena
Wallpaper: embossing folder by Sheena, Distress Ink and guilding wax
Stamps coloured with Aqua Tints by Spectrum Noir
House number by Tim Holtz and coloured with Ranger alcohol ink
Glass bottle by Tim Holtz filled with cosmic shimmer glitter
3 – Own Choice: a gift: Polymer clay painted fairy door accordion book
I had so many thoughts on this third item but in the end wanted to show what I haven’t shown already: stamping into polymer clay! And who can resist fairies! So here is my super glittery polymer clay painted fairy tree accordion book.
Polymer clay by Fimo, stamp by Sheena, acrylic and acrylic dyna paints by Pebeo
Inside background Aqua Tints and Distress Ink with spritz and flick effect
Stamps by Sheena (silhouette grasses and hidden fairies)
So a few weeks since buying my Spectrum Noir pens (I already had the pencils), after watching all the DVDs from Crafters Companion I watched a sped-up version of Unky colouring in her digi stamp. She uses copics and polychromos but I managed to substitute the colours for Spectrum Noir ones. I spent an evening gazing at the amazing eye! Totally incredible technique to make it look very lifelike!
Did I pat myself on the back? You betcha! I had no idea I could do this! Just look at the depth to the facial features and that eye!
What a happy and colourful layout today! Background was book pages, map and distress inks then misted with my homemade Aqua Tint Shimmer sprays. Stencils used were by Sheena as were the stamps and quote.
